Experience
Last year I worked in a primary school in Parsons Green, teaching Year 6 as part of a GTP programme. I passed Numeracy, Literacy and ICT exams, took whole class sessions as well as smaller group teaching in all Maths, English, Geography, History, ICT and Art. I attended a great number of GTP course lectures on teaching and subject content and teaching presentation.
Biography
I grew up in St Andrews and went to St Leonards School where I gained an excellent and well rounded education. I took part in all sports, becoming Vice Captain of Games and Captain of Tennis in my final year. I also gained Grade 8 Piano with Distinction and passed Gold LAMDA (Drama) with Honours.
At University I chose to study Geography due to the wide range of its topics and the current value in understanding our society, learning about world health issues for example. Outside of work, I continued to enjoy music and sport, as well as fine art classes and some travelling. I was awarded a music scholarship in piano performance.
As soon as I finished University, I moved down to London to escape the little town of St Andrews and to experience the diversity, culture and art the city has to offer.
I feel that teaching suits me best as I have so much to offer in terms of being a well-rounded, focused and hard-working person. I always strive to achieve the best in everything I do and being a team-leader in the past, I also work to get the best out of people, communicate well and produce excellent results.
I would describe myself as a person who wants to succeed in that which I choose to do, and I am highly driven in those things that I enjoy and value. I loved working with children when I was under the GTP training course last year, and taught in a local Fulham primary school, with experience in class, small group and individual one-on-one sessions.
Personal Approach
My approach to teaching has various steps. Firstly, I have been taught, and learnt from my own experience, that preperation and planning is paramount. I access what has to be achieved and then plan steps towards the final result - obviously, from experience, you have to learn to adapt these and spend time where it is needed more depending on the student. Teaching is also about making the topic interesting, by practical testing and application - eg teaching numeracy through currency etc. This frequently has a more positive reaction and is more likely to capture the student than boring sums; Experiments in science are more likely to bring about learning that statistics on the board.
Further, rewarding when credit is due should never been undermined, particularly with younger students for whom stickers mean the world. Working with and communicating with parents is also vitally important as well.
